Kidnapped and sold into slavery while still a child, she was cruelly given the name Bakhita, meaning “fortunate” as a joke. She endured torture and dehumanization for years, sold to different people and taken miles from home. She eventually ended up in Italy as a chaperone for a girl attending a school run by Catholic Sisters. The kindness she was shown there led her to engage in a legal battle for her freedom and to allow her to remain with the Sisters. She won, and was a cheerful, devoted presence there for the rest of her life, with the entire town becoming impressed by her story and seeing her as a protector during World War II.
As the only canonized Saint of Sudan and because January is slavery and human trafficking awareness month, we will be hosting double donations in honor of her on social media. In addition, a portion of all print proceeds will be going to organizations aiding Sudan.
