Born into a violent, unstable world of excess and loss, Elizabeth was passed around through houses of nobility and royalty in her early life. She preferred solitude and simplicity. Though she loved the man she was promised to marry and they had three children, he died young and Elizabeth was devastated. Her power, children, and property were again taken from her, but she would not abandon her decision to remain unmarried, give away her fortune, and become a Third Order Franciscan. When she was at last able to do this, she continued the work she began while she’d been married - giving food to those in need, and establishing and working in a hospital. She died while caring for the sick at the age of only 24.
