This incredibly powerful woman changed the course of history - and began life as the daughter of the circus bear-keeper. Though her story is cloudy due to the biased nature of her biographers, her legacy is impossible to erase. Not only did she continue to make the Byzantine Empire a strong force, but reinforced its Christian identity, and passed sweeping reforms for the rights and safety of women, since she herself had been exploited in numerous ways.
